A new clinical study is planned for improving methods of oral immunotherapy treatments which, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (AAAAI), have not been ready for use in private practice yet, due to a variety of adverse events.
Despite this recommendation, many allergists are beginning to offer oral immunotherapy treatments via private practice, which concerns many of the top researchers. At this time, no oral immunotherapy treatments for food allergies have been approved by the FDA outside of controlled, clinical trials.
The new study, recently published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology involves boiling peanut before use in desensitization treatments, in order to reduce the adverse effects found with current oral immunotherapy trials.
Industry professionals continue to remain optimistic about the future of food allergy research and many treatment options currently undergoing clinical trials.
